J is for Joyous times

Today is New Years day according to the Hindu Calendar. Today is the New Year's day for the Deccan region of India. The traditional Hindu Calendar called the 'Saka' starts from the month of April every year. The date varies depending on lunar cycles and time of the Solar Year.

We in Andhra Pradesh call it 'Ugadi'. We prepare a special concoction called as 'Ugadi Pachchadi'. It symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of different experiences (sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise), which should be accepted together and with equanimity through the New Year.

We also have different names for different years. This year is called 'Vijaya' or 'Victory'. May this year bring prosperity and victory to all my readers.
