Author: Shubha Vilas
Publishers:
Genre: Mythology
Mythology is a subject which is vast and well-known. Everyone knows atleast a bit about something and has his/her own interpretation of the epic stories. I have my set opinions too.
I got my first taste of Ramayana (like most 80s kids!) from Sagar's televised version. Arun Govil is my Rama when I close my eyes. Well, the impact was huge.

So when I started reading Shubha Vilas's interepretation of Ramayana, my protogonist is stil Arun Govil :D Ramayana isnt only about Lord Rama and Sita and the villainous Ravana. It has got multitudes of mini-stories within and thats exactly what the author tries to tell us. The focus is on the main characters but then we are told about many other things that happen around.

The author tries to show us that even though the story is really old, It is very relevant in today's times too. I refrain from viewing the book as a religious one. I saw it as a book that tries to advise how life can be lived with reference to the mythological characters.

I ,particularly, am always intrigued by Sita. She is the most dutiful wife who follows her husband through everything including the exile. But still she got tempted by a deer inspite of having been warned by Lakshmana. This is very humane quality and very relatable. You can be very intelligent and smart but temptations can exist and we can be susceptible.

The key highlight for me in this book is how the author define relationships especially between the husband and wife. This delicate relationship is shown very nicely.

Rama is shown to be the leader and how a leader should be. How he makes his decisions and how he weighs his pros and cons as he makes them, are things to be learned by anyone who aspires to be a leader too.

Sita is shown as the princess who has never seen any problems in her life, always had all the luxuries in life, is suddenly faced with exile. She is suddenly thrown out of her comfort zone. How she deals with it , is an inpiration for all of us. She isnt a doormat. She doesnt do things just because she is a dutiful wife. She has a logic and reason for everything.

I also particularly like the relationship showed between Lakshmana and Urmila. Afterall, he chose to follow Rama into exile and Urmila doesnt. She also has her own reason and which is very interesting read.

Overall, the author does manage to tell an inspirational story with lot of footnotes. He doesn't get preachy or too religious which is what is expected out of any mythology read.Shubh Vilas is an spiritual and motivational speaker and the book shows it. I am thoroughly impressed by the way he puts forwards his thoughts but really doesn't seem too imposing.

I am always wary of fiction which combines history, mythology and science with the contemporary world. I am always a cat on the fence with mythology. Who can say whether they are just stories or factual. Who can say that even if the Mahabharata occurred, the stories are over exaggerated and sometimes fantasised beyond belief.

Same can be said for history. There is no argument that Alexander existed and all that he did is well scripted.but when writers takes Liberty to weave stories from each fact they read, the line between reality and fiction blurs. Now what is true and what isn't becomes a question.

Also famous is the attempt to scientifically explain religious scriptures. Given our cynical approach to everything, we refuse to believe in divinity and look for logic in everything. Every binary makes more sense in this day and age.

I know little of Alexander and my Mahabharata is limited to the B.R.Chopra's TV serials. So I won't even get into arguing whether the author has his facts straight or not.

I find the whole biological aspect of novel, hard to digest. Too much is written and too fast to make it believable for me.

The author shows enough knowledge to take up history ,science and mythology with authority. No doubt loads of research went into the book.

The narrative of the novel is fast paced and kept me hooked throughout the 348 pages. As the novel easily flits from 316BC to current times , the writing style doesn't tire you or confuse you.
As is my issue with many novels these days, the author doesn't spend too much time in drawing a character graph for all and hence I do t connect or empathise with the characters.
The characters are just puppets and the dead Alexander seems more alive then them. Vijay's dilemma to save his fiancé and his ex seems to mechanical too. There was a great chance to explore the dynamics and tension between Vijay,Radha and Alice. But the author skims through that aspect awkwardly. I dont expect a soap opera amonst all the adventure but a human angle is always a good connect in a story. Isn't it? Even the killers shown to be brutal and violent, donot evoke the required emotions of fear. The emotional quotient of the book is the only drawback.

But the setup is the hero not the characters. And in that author succeeds to an extent. Mahabharata is always intriguing as it has so many characters and so many layers. Any layer taken is always interesting to delve in.
The secret of this story also is taken from one of the many interesting layers of the Epic.

I sometimes chuckle as Indian Intelligence is shown almost like the Hollywood's Indianised version of FBI. I dont know how IB operates in India but the officers dont look anything like stylish portrayal given to them in the book.

There is enough in the story to keep me thinking and also anticipate the next book in the series.

I am getting a deja vu as I read this book. I look into the archives and find the review I wrote for the author's previous book
http://www.vevisia.com/2012/11/the-bankster-by-ravi-subramaniam-book.html

I almost feel I am reading the same thing with different names and obviously different settings. We still have the banking and the financial background and now we have the additional gaming and virtual currency thrown in.

I wont boost of my gaming know-how too much but I am indirectly in this world. I can proudly say that I am game designer wife and every dinner table conversation in my house is about monetisation, gameplay ,hooks and level designing. I have seen the progess of games from console to mobile to social as my husband progressed through them all. It is a very exciting dinner table conversation I tell you. I wouldnt ever bring my own office talk home.

Anyways, that is just to say that I can review this book with some form of knowledge in the gaming industry. I hate Zynga games and the social games overall though. I am still a AOE console player.

Coming back to the book, it is interesting to say the least. Lot of locations, lot of nationalities and loads of different characters bombard you from the get go. It isnt a simple read. You need to invest some memory to remember all the characters in the book to keep track of the fast paced events happening almost in every few pages.

The story is crisp and interesting but in most parts very predictable. But I didnt feel like putting down the book or not finishing it. I dont finish books just out of compulsion.

Enough big names and designations are thrown in with seeming ease and it kind of hooks you. The bitcoins and the cotton trail web elements are intriguing to an extent. But again almost identical to the previous book, none of the character really appeals to me. The characters run the plot but do nothing to stay on in my mind. I don't remember many names too. Maybe that is a flaw in a story which runs not on the people's perspective but on events happening around them.

The technical terms used in the book are never overwelming. Even though, I am a technical person, I dont really like books to be too heavy on technical jargon. Effortlessly, the writer takes us into the world of bitcoins , TOR , Credit card systems and social gaming and one feels totally at ease with all of them.
A reader is exposed to a new world which usually people dont know or think much about. The drug world and the cotton trail website used for drugs and prostitution actually made me think of it. I know everything can be done on the net but I never really thought of it too seriously.

Overall a good attempt but I am hoping for a fresher and new approach towards the next book Mr. Subramanyiam comes up with. I am already looking forward to it.
So while travelling to work today, this song randomly played from my playlist

So if you have ever lived away from your home country and can understand the language in which the
song is sung, you know that the song hits you where it hurts the most, without fail! Each time, Every effing time..

Its easy to get lost in the fast paced lanes of work and life. It is easy to get used to the materialistic comforts. Its easy to get used to all things we don't have or we longed for or cribbed for back home. Its really easy to get spoiled by such comforts. But there is a but.

I can say this with 99% confidence that we never feel complete. I , for sure, have left a part of me back home. I cant replace that very little part of me with anything. The people I love, I meet online or they come to meet me often. I Skype my parents daily. I don't miss them emotionally.

I miss my country. I am not being patriotic. Its just what I am. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I loved to crib/complain about the noise, pollution, population, etc; I miss that! I have nothing to complain or crib about here. I feel I don't have any rights to complain. You can only criticize what it is your own. I miss owning my country.

My homepage is still stuck on 'google.co.in' and my news is nothing related to me anymore. The weather shows heat while I sit in sweaters shivering. Modi does something , but it doesn't really impact me. The inflation doesn't change my next onion buy. ( They are anyways really costly here!)

The song ends and the feeling is pushed back, just next to that empty space. No point thinking about it when I know, I like that hero, will not return. Maybe, someday. But for today, I ignore the feeling , numb myself and gush about how the traffic moves so smoothly and the pancake tastes so yummy!

YIt is overwhelming ,to say the least ,when your first child is born. You can just be two of you or have an entire village to raise your new born, but it is daunting ,nonetheless.

I clearly remember my first venture out into big bad world of shopping with my little one.

I went out with an intention of browsing and finding out about various baby products out there. I had no clue, you see! Also, as per My family traditions,I wasn't supposed to buy any baby products before birth itself. So I put no research in it.

But within 15 minutes, I realised 3 things:

1) You can't just browse and look around with a newborn.

2) Baby need a diaper change.

3) Baby needs a feed.

So within 20 minutes,we are back into the car heading home. I ask my ever supportive relatives to get me the essentials.

After 3 months, I found this site http://www.babyoye.com and joined it I 2011. I think it was almost within a couple of weeks it was launched by Karishma Kapoor.

First, I got a pram here. I was really happy with prompt delivery and quality of the product. I ,then, got a high chair and a toddler cot from here ,amongst other things.

I was happy that I could get things at my doorstep and within a couple of days of order. I was happy that all that I could ask for in terms of baby products, I got to see under one virtual roof.

Basically, it gave a sense of being able to do something without needing some help or support with baby care.

I never had any issues with the services and all the products I ordered from their site were as per expectations.

I thank the team for providing quality products for a harrowed new mother right when she needed it the most.

Life is a routine when its just us 3. Its a well oiled machine which runs without a hitch most of the times. But the moment the equation has more people, the well oiled machine shows its many hitches. Those hitches are blatantly apparent and needn't be spoken out loud about and sometimes really embarrassing.
So yes those hitches made me quit the A-Z challenge at M. But then among all chaos , I did have a vacation in the amazing Rotorua-Taupo.
So I will post my R as Rotorua and T is Taupo. Rotorua and Taupo are the great lakes in the Bay of Plenty region in North Island of Newzealand. Both are known for their geothermal activities and have a lot of geysers. Lake Taupo lies in the Caldera created by a super-volcanic eruption.

Here are some pictures of our vacation in the wonder lakes:
This is my entry to the #AtoZChallenge 2014. I am having loads of fun reminiscing about my favorite places in the world (among-st the very few that I have visited!) . If you want to check out the whole list I will cover through the month, check out my theme post.

M is for many places I like and I have visited these places more times than I can count on my fingers.

First one of them is Madras( aka Chennai). It is a metropolitan city along the Coromondel coat of South India. This is where my favorite girl cousin lived and hence I have great memories from the place. I vividly remember the huge 6ft paper dosa that they serve in a beach side shanty and also the parottas from the Saravana bhavan.

Madras/Chennai boosts of the second longest beach in the world-The Marina beach. Also famous is the VGP Golden Beach.
Next is Matheran which is a hill station in the state of Maharastra,India. Unique about Matheran is that it is a state declared eco-sensitive area. No form of automobiles are allowed apart from emergency ambulances here. So it is a pollution-free area. This is the relief that the nearby Mumbai people require.
This is my entry to the #AtoZChallenge 2014. I am having loads of fun reminiscing about my favorite places in the world (among-st the very few that I have visited!) . If you want to check out the whole list I will cover through the month, check out my theme post.

This place is famous and notorious for many things. Movies and TV sitcoms show us that this is the place for all things wild! So yes I expected naked girls, wild men and drunken weddings when I went to Vegas. :D

But yes going there with your family isnt exactly the kind of wild that those movies and TV sitcoms want you to do! But still, I had my evenings away from family. But I didnt see any nakedness or anything much wild but still what I saw was really amazing. This was the world where there was no day or night. Time stays still here. Or it passes by and you'd never know while you wait to strike some gold at a random slot machine.

Me and mum were stuck at the 25 cent or was it 5 cent slot machine in MGM casino almost whole of the night. My dad tried to protest ( again he was scared of the notorious aspect of the city!) but he went back to his room to sleep :O We did win! Actually mum did. We put in overall $150 and I think we won some $100 on a slot. :D It took us all our might not to spend all our dollars that night. The place is addictive to say the least.

We came to the strip, stayed there and went on with rest of the trip. So all we covered in Las Vegas were the casinos on the strip. And most of the time, it we spent on a slot machine :p My sister-in-law who claimed to be a blackjack expert tried her hand miserably at it. I did not even try to aim higher than the slot machines and I especially stuck to the mechanical machines.

Yeah I should go back and see the place properly and then probably tell you about the places I liked. Afterall, the slot machine cant be just the only thing to see in vegas, right?
As a child, I don't remember many vacations to places other than my grandparents place which is also a K Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers were there and ailing with cancer. So my summers and any given school holidays were spent in their homes. Those were really the best times of my carefree childhood. I was also born in Kakinada.

My first real holiday came when my brother got admission in IEEE, Kozhikode. Kerala, the most popular tourist hub in India, came into my family radar. So this K was very prominent in our lives for almost 4 years.

In Kerala, my absolute favorite is K for Kovalam beach.

Kovalam is a beach town near Trivandrum, Kerala. It is sometimes referred as Paradise of the South and that is so true. Beaches in India tend to be muddy or rocky. The pristine aquamarine waters are a rare sight.

Kovalam was the first beach in India which I saw whose blue waters wowed me beyond words.

The place has three beaches-The Lighthouse beach, Hawah Beach and Samudra beach.

Haha! I know I just wanted to stick in Bangalore and not at the letter B. :D Also, to reason it out, that's the area I have spent maximum time in this city. So there!

Bangalore, this is the city, I first came to know as my brother's first Big Job city. The city which I didnt like then because it meant my brother would not come home after 4 years of being in a hostel. Little did I know, that the next stop after Bangalore for him was the Big Apple and he would never ever be back home. But I am drifting away from the topic.

It took almost 10 years for me to change that sentiment about the city. It was when I met family from my husband's side whom I adore. So Bangalore now is the city where they live.

Bangalore, capital of Karnataka, is the First city of the IT boom in India. Most westerners might even know it as the city to which all the jobs are outsourced. :D

So here are the places I liked in Bangalore:

1) Vidhan Saudha houses the legislative assembly of Karnataka State.

Have a go at the Russell Market if you like fresh produce and all the madness of wholesale buyers. I somehow look for these markets everywhere I go. Again, Bangalore has many yummy places to please foodies. My favorite place here is Mavalli Tiffin Room(MTR) in the Lalbaugh. Its also a tourist hube but has yummy south indian food. Also The Iyengar Bakery in Jayanagar is amongst a favorite haunt.

I havent been here too many times to talk like a local and on most trips I have been to the malls and the IT companies which are boring to blog about. I think I need to revisit Bangalore like a pakka tourist and hop on the Namma Metro and see more places here. I have to see the churches and temples the place is famous for.
The land of the Nawabs and the ITians

The city that you live in, doesnt really evoke many touristy feelings. It is where the life is routine and most of the time when you step out, its to run errands. But once, you are out of the city, it is then you start appreciating its beauty and appeal.

Hyderabad was where I had my first home for which I was solely responsible. It made me an adult, in all the ways you can think of! I came here from Bombay. If you know Bombay and Hyderabad, you know that the speed difference made me mad. If Bombay is lightening speed, Hyderabad is turtle slow. Everyone is a nawab( king) here. Things get postponed and it isnt really a big deal. Yes! It is a lifestyle to get used to.

The places I love in Hyderabad are:

1) The Zoo! The Hyderabad's zoo is the best in India. Its huge and well-maintained and constantly being improved. It is one place we used to go, every month or so.
It is a small water body in the MLA colony, Jubilee Hills,Hyderabad.
Goa is my retirement plan. It was my first vacation with friends. It was my honeymoon destination and it will be where I live my last years. I love Goa.

Goa is all about the Beaches, the architecture and the culture. It owes its unique culture to Portugal. Being a Portuguese colony and then being a hub for hippies and expats from all over the world, sets the place apart from other Indian attractions.

I love the open carefree nature of the locals here. Though, as times change and globalization hit India, Goa also has been commercialized but still most villages still retain their charm.

A few of my favorite places in Goa are:
Maybe because I always choose Colva Beach Resort,GTDC as my accomadation in South Goa. Also the Candolim and Calungate beaches is on my most visited list of Beaches in North Goa.

There are certain people who make life more special. You always have your parents and siblings to make you feel wanted. But apart from this inner circle, when you have people who make you feel so good and wanted, you literally feel blessed.
This is my family after my own family and they live in Eluru, Andhra, India. This is a small town/city along the
coast of Lake Kolleru and is in Western Godhavari District. These people make Eluru special and E could signify no other place for me.
Here are a few interesting places around Eluru:
The dream took a long time coming. I was 23 years when I first went to the place. But for a middle class Indian girl , even at 23, it was wonderful. I was still into the love stories , I hadn't been through a heartbreak yet and so the Prince Charming bubble was very well intact.

But yes that was years ago. I have a very few pictures of the time and it wasnt the age of Instagram and selfies. We were more into experiencing real-time rather than sharing pictures online. :D

My favorite memory was in the Haunted Mansion ( or was it the house?) . To say I was scared, is undermining the whole situation. There was this mummy guy ( or girl!?!) who was at the end , nearly when I could see the exit. I was sort of looking at the mummy from a distance and had made up my mind that it was a statue. So as I walked past and the thing moved, I almost peed in my pants. The Mummy guy literally chased me out of the door and when I came out , I was on my four limbs, crawling out scared. He/She was laughing at that point. Well! Even that scared me.

Here are a few pictures from the place.
This is my entry to the #AtoZChallenge 2014. I am having loads of fun reminiscing about my favorite places in the world (among-st the very few that I have visited!) . If you want to check out the whole list I will cover through the month, check out my theme post.

Bombay or now 'Mumbai' is the busiest city I have ever been to.
The first thing that comes to mind when I talk of Mumbai is this song[You Tube Link]:

'Ae Dil Hain Mushkil Jeena Yahan
Zara hatke zara bachke
Yeh hain Mumbai meri Jaan'

Translated roughly as

'Oh Heart, it is difficult living here
be careful, be mindful
This is Mumbai ,my love'

And to think this song was written in the year 1956. If anything, the population must have quadrupled from than to now. But the city is magnanimous by heart. There is place for everyone. Actually, there is a saying that coming to Mumbai is like buying a one-way ticket. It doesn't let you go back easily.

I came into the city with no intention of liking it. I was uprooted during my high school and brought here. Anyone can tell how traumatic that can be. But the city worked its magic and within a year , I was talking and being a Mumbaiyya.
I was talking in time. A conversation would always centre around time. Right down to the minute , absurd time like 8:19AM. No 8:20 wont work. You will be chasing the tail of the Local train at 8:20AM.

So the places that I love the most in Mumbai are:
1) Siddhivinayak Temple! Its got some magic and I am not talking religious. The place vibrates with the devotion of all the people who believe in its power.
For those who know me, They would wonder why A is isn't for Auckland. For those who don't know me, Auckland,NZ is where I live. But Austin to me is special because its my Brother's home.

'Maayka', or mother's home, after marriage, always holds a special place in a woman's heart. I am lucky that my brother's abode in Austin is also like my 'Maayka'. This is all thanks to my sister-in-law who treats me like her own.

So lets get to Austin,'The live music capital of the world' , capital of Texas,USA. This is the most laid-back , traditional and clean capital I think there is.

I couldn't emphasize more on the 'clean' aspect here. Austin has the most strict no-smoking ordinances. I wish, it were so in more and more places across the world. It is my only complaint about my own home, Auckland. There is a lot of passive smoking going on here. But that isn't our topic,is it?

Thanks to it also being the 'Silicon Hills' with many IT company Headquarters here, my brother can earn a good livelihood.
The places I liked to visit in Austin :
1) The Capitol,Austin
